South Texas Ride - Feb. 2009

Folks on this wonderful ride were: Enrique & Yoolanda Garcia, Tom & Pha Andrews, John & Cathy Conniff, Doc Farley, JC & Millie Fazzino, Bob & Kathy Randall, Jessee & Gina Martinez (Chapt. T ), Dave Getz, Israel Guerra, Billy & Tim Laue, Michael & Priscilla, Lee, Jack Miller, John & Wanda Osborn, Richard & Mary Seay, Gene Thomas and Jimmy & Johnnie Faye Tidwell. The South Texas caravan consisted of 13 bikes, 3 trikes and one Chevy Suburban. Millie took her SUV because of her recent back surgery, so Yolanda, Cathy & Mary rode with her. JC and the Tidwells (the Hearne connection) spent the night in Lockhart and met us as we passed through. Billy's cousins, Bob & Kathy Randall, met us in Refugio at the DQ coffee-break. The first night was in South Padre at the Ramada Limited. We all dinned across the street at Blackbeard's Seafood Restaurant and as usual ate TOO MUCH, but had a great time visiting. Saturday we rode to Progresso and parked the bikes on the US side of the border and walked across to shop and eat lunch in Nuevo Progresso. Temperature got up to 90 degrees Saturday - HOT!. We arrived at the motel in Pharr, all took a refreshing nap and many of the group went to the Our Lady of San Juan Basilica in San Juan and to the church service. Afterwards it was time to do "dinner duty" - you know we HAD to eat again. Enrique's sister Lilly met us at Poncho's Mexican Cafe where we had a great meal. The Garcia's had individual bouquets of red foil candy kisses made to look like roses for all the women. Thanks to them for thinking of this and saving us guys on Valentines night!!!!. Afterwards, margaritas flowed in the game room at the motel. Sunday Enrique's cousin Roy met us at the motel and got us started out on a 300 mile day ride. We went through Israel's stomping ground in San Isidera, through Rio Grande City (where General Robert E. Lee served as a Lt. in the US Army in the early 1800's before the Civil War). We went on through Roma, where 7,000 Mexican kids cross the river every day to attend school in the US - go figure? In Zapata we ate at Paraiso's , famous for their chicken fried steak. Billy & Gene got the LARGE, and it was really large. Others got the small and it was large. We went by the international ferry at Los Ebanos. This is a two-car ferry that is hand-pulled across the Rio Grand. On the return trip we also rode across the Falcon Dam on the Rio Grand where we got haseled by the US immigration folks when we came back across because we did not all have our passports. We got back to the motel about 5:30pm, promplty ordered five pizzas because guess what?... We were hungry! Margaritas followed the pizza. Monday it was packing time for a 9:00am departure. We had lunch at the DQ in Three Rivers and arrived home late-afternoon. It was a great, relaxing, fun-filled trip with plenty of sights and stories to tell.
